Characterization of the conservation state

When planning to work on an old construction, its components and materials have to be characterized, and the anomalies that may be present have to be diagnosed. The access to and knowledgeable use of survey methods and tools is therefore crucial.

During the life of a construction or structure, it is frequently noted that its performance is insufficient or unsuitable for the respective purpose. These insufficiencies may originate in the construction itself, due to design or execution errors, or result from the forces of time (deterioration, damage), or provoked by an alteration of external circumstances.
